Before the gig the promoter came to me and said ‘you know that guy from Beastie Boys…he just died’. I froze, I don’t even know why. So many musicians I liked passed away but this one, no one in Beastie Boys can die, they are the super heroes of fun.
Few minutes later I kind of forgot about it and I had such a great night.
I don’t know what I’m talking about.

I’ve been wondering a lot about these two quotes, somehow they make certain thoughts I had more visible and clear.
All these talks of bedroom pop for example, of melancholia associated sometimes to my music it always felt wrong or at list inaccurate to me, but I’m interested in what people see when they see music.
It feels that if we are thinking and talking about ‘now’ and use music as a language, we are not allowed to wonder of past images. Or if we do it’s all about ‘childwood memories and the loss of them’
Most of those past images, from childhood for example, form and unacknowledged who we are now. A fundamental texture of us, it’s what make us special.
To re-create that texture or use it in music it is a form of showing the present. Of what we are now, how we changed according to what we were.
The present isn’t a straight line with one direction, to me present is whatever exist of us ‘now’.

The idea of bedroom becomes the idea of a safe shelter where we are allowed to isolate our self from the outside storm (big cities sound like a storm at times).
A close world where nothing has to make sense, where our sense of freedom is formed in a way.
It’s a big step to open the door of our room and let people see what’s going on inside. A dreamer with no sense of reality would never do that, a dreamer needs to sleep in order to keep his dreams vivid.
Our life dealing with reality, us growing up, it all gets richer and for sure more interesting than any childhood dreams.

Like Micky (our US brilliant sound-man) use to say all the time, it’s about layers, to show where something came from you take away layers.
You must see the layers first in order to take them away one after the other.

I had this big piece of paper in front of me while recording, I would write notes and ideas related to the songs and the album.
‘Never let the dust settle on anything, move things around’ was the first sentence I wrote on that piece of paper.
